Independent Study:
If you have a Google Classroom up and running in your classroom already, students can simply complete and turn in assignments from home or anywhere. Google Classroom and Google Drive both have apps for mobile devices. Assignments can be individualized as well. Perhaps your IS student needs something a little different from the other students. Create an assignment just for that student. This will allow you to add and personalize content each day as needed. The majority of your Google Classroom work will remain the same for all students, causing you a minimum of extra work.
Sub Plans:
Once you have a Google Classroom up and running, you also have an automated platform for Sub Plans. Simply post the assignments you want completed in your Google Classroom. If you are a teacher in 5th grade and above, you can also set up your GoGuardian session ahead of time or even monitor students while out at that conference. This will help keep students on task while using the Chromebooks with a substitute in the room.
